Artists that I admire and love...Wax on/Wax Off Party

One of the highlights of DJing before the onset of the mp3...was the weekly trip to the record store. There was nothing more exciting. I spent hours picking out the new imports and releases and trying to beat the dudes to the turntables so I could listen. Some tracks were pure shite others well completely blew me away. Next step cash register where you prayed you had enough in your bank account to get all your selections. Record shopping is expensive damn! Next stop home to listen to those tracks over and over and build your mix...absolute bliss...miss those days...miss the record shops...my bank account is a little happier but I digress.

So I am happy and honored to report that this Thursday I will share a guest spot with Marlon B and Achour Mezi at the 5th installment of the Wax On/ Wax Off Party thrown by DJ Cosi and DJ RedLox.

Wax On/ Wax Off is monthly vinyl party with residents DJ Redlox & DJ Cosi (Freedom Party & Red Rooster saturdays.) Each installment has guest DJs

DJ Redlox
DJ Cosi
Redlox and Cosi state "Our goal is to have another outlet in the NYC DJ scene which goes back to the real roots of DJ culture, where you actually had to buy a physical record, pick out a selection of records for a set, and worst of all, carry those mothers to a gig. Our sets will always display the true personality and dedication to the craft of the DJ."

So what is so exciting about this party besides the fact that these DJs are amazing...I am not including myself of course...well maybe just a little ; ) We will be spinning all vinyl!!!! Yes packing up the records and slinging them on my back just like the old days and it feels oh so good. Festivities start at 8pm on Thursday June 21st  and is located La Linea, ( http://lalinealounge.com/) 151 1st avenue btw 1st and 2nd st) and there is no cover. So come drink, be merry and party like it's 1999...you know the era before models, reality show stars and heiresses decided they were DJs...yeah I said it ; )

Artists that I admire and love...Ethikos Productions

So I get a email a few weeks ago...asking if I would be interested in creating the sound for a series of One Acts by Israel Horovitz...what? Hell yes!!! I think I answered that email back in 3.5 seconds. I first had the honor of originating the sound for Beirut Rocks back in 2007 with another amazing troupe Barefoot Theater Company www.barefoottheatrecompany.org, and meeting Mr. Israel Horovitz, who is probably the coolest cat ever and yes I have a crush on him u would too after reading his work and just meeting him. Move forward to present day, landed the gig and have totally fallen in love with the company behind the upcoming show Ethikos Productions.

Ethikos Productions is a non-profit production company, that sprung from a connection that actors/producers Brian Rice and Jenna Ciralli, founded in the classroom at William Esper Studio. These two are simply amazing...I have seen them in rehearsal and get ready folks. Their inaugural production will be “Israel Horovitz One-Acts, the production is comprised of exciting, young NYC-based artists from backgrounds as varied as Harvard, Rutgers, the William Esper Studio, and Life 101.

 https://www.facebook.com/IHOneActs

Israel Horovitz One-Acts, will feature It’s Called the Sugar Plum, Beirut Rocks, and the U.S. Premiere of his latest farce, The Bump.  Directed by former Flea Resident Director Mia Walker, the production previews July 5, with opening night slated for Friday, July 6.  All tickets are only $20.

Together, “Sugar Plum” and “Beirut Rocks,” mark a unique pairing of Horovitz’s work, recommended by the playwright himself. Set in the later 1950s Cambridge, It's Called Sugar Plum has two college students fighting grief, guilt and greed in the wake of a tragic accident. This combination is also being produced in Paris, France this year. Beirut Rocks is a shocking study in the shattering events of the Hezbollah air raids on Beirut in 2006. Complementing these two pieces is The Bump, a tragically sweet brief encounter between two conflicted hearts in a U.S. passport office. Ethikos Productions will put these three short plays side by side, for an evening of bold theatrical work across generations.

cast includes Jenna Ciralli, Julie Asriyan-Piotrowski, Hunter Thore, Brian Rice, Lyle Friedman and director Mia Walker. Dan Catomeris is also part of the great cast.

Ethikos Productions states "This production marks the moment to take our art to new professional heights. We will be performing at the well-known and respected venue, The Flea Theater. (www.theflea.org) The Flea represents the quintessential off-Broadway experience of taking risks and exploring gutsy new works. As a maverick production company, we value having our performances at a venue that truly fosters artistic integrity. Israel Horovitz, the celebrated playwright will be collaborating with us on our project"

Mr. Horovitz looks on as Jenna and Brian read The Bump
Additionally, the director Mia Walker is a power house, that i completely adore. Mia directs beautifully, is kind to her actors and is an absolute gem to work with. Mia is currently Assistant Director of Broadway’s "Porgy and Bess," and  will be directing all three one-acts.

Mr. Horovitz's writing is dynamic, the actors stellar, the production team beyond spectacular if i do say so myself...so inside of heading to the local bar and wasting 20 bucks on watered down drinks and cheap beer spend it on some worthwhile, thought provoking theater trust me u will not be disappointed.

Save the date!
Performances: July 5 - 8, Thursday - Sunday - 7 pm
July 12 - 15, Thurs - Sunday - 9 pm
info on tickets and cast can be found here at  http://www.theflea.org/Israel Horovitz One-Acts

The cast includes Julie Asriyan-Piotrowski, Dan Catomeris, Jenna Ciralli, Lyle Friedman, Brian Rice, and Hunter Thore.  The design team includes Jason Sherwood (set), Jonathan Cottle (lighting), Ashley Farra (costumes), Kate Sinclair Foster (props), Tasha Guevara (sound) me!!!, Daphne Schmon (video), Megan O’Keefe (dramaturg), Rachael Harris (technical director), Jenna Lloyd (asst. lighting), and Nicole Greene (stage manager).  Jenna Ciralli, Jeffrey Galli, and Brian Rice serve as producers, with John H. Kaufman III serving as associate producer.

So u want to kick the DJ off the decks huh?

dear promoters, managers, club and bar venue owners who think u know music...news flash...u don't. So u think it's cool to kick talented DJs such as Dennis Ferrer or Mark Farina and others off the decks because your clientele doesn't like the music another newsflash that just shows your lack of professionalism and home training to put it bluntly. Mr. Farina I hope u went back to your hotel ordered the most expensive scotch had a day at the spa and charged them for it. Venue. your clientele may have a lot of money but more than likely they have no sense of class, couth or culture and are dumb enough to pay 300 -400 for a bottle one can get at the liquor store for 40 bucks and enjoy in the comforts of one's home.

Let me enlighten u bottle buyers a bit most bottles are married with well liquor didn't know that did ya when the pretty little girl brings the bottle over ever check to see if the seal is cracked bet ya don't and here u go drinking Popov vodka instead of Belvedere ha!

To the venues engaging in this low class behavior...do u read? are u deaf? why not take the time to check out the artist before u book them oh wait probably to busy getting coked up in your office to pay attention to anything. Know what genre of music u are asking for...stupidity is a sad thing. But alas u still have to pay the DJ don't u? esp if they are  a name and u contracted them.

Please stop with the madness of wanting to pay DJs in drinks as well...not all of us are alcoholics like u and we have bills just like everyone else and we like to pay them.

As for the Djs listen times are hard so if venues want to hear crap music make them pay and pay highly i would spin for close to nothing if i can play good music. However if by chance i am in a situation where I am forced to play some pop dribble...guess what someone is dipping in their pocket and paying me.  I am not giving up hope that music will make a come back that someone will come to me and make a slamming request. I know the younger generation has good taste and will rise to the top.

Personally, I believe that most of these venue runners were picked on as kids and now they are seeking revenge but it's cool once a cornball always a cornball.  These recent party goers don't want to support good music then we should return payment in kind don't play it spread the word about good underground artists/events support their functions  blog, tweet and facebook about them. To the artists and party goers. vice versa if a venue has treated an artist/DJ badly don't support them I will never support a venue that has disrespected an artist what's next the staff and performers will have to enter thru the kitchen? New York used to be the hub of nightlife now it looks like college night in Wisconsin.

If u really want to educate yourselves and I suggest that u do...please check out this documentary by my friend Jean-Paul Noel (JP) (co-director) Angelo Boyke (director) and Domingo Canate (producer). This film take the viewers on a journey into sound and vision that is as exciting for house music aficionados as it is for newcomers to the scene.

Hands To The Sky is a documentary that focuses on House Music. It removes the dance experience from the confines of the box and plants it in the park, lays it on the beach and sets it in countless unexpected, exciting places.

This documentary zooms in on outdoor House Music events in various locations; locally and globally. The adroit camera crew captures the passion and dedication of the DJ's and promoters and the indisputable theme of love and unity that emanates from the speakers as well as the perspiration of the devoted tribe of dancers.

Part One kicks off with east coast contemporaries, while Part Two will showcase the heat that House Music creates throughout the world, including but not limited to Brazil, Spain, Africa and the UK.

In my opinion...

It's time to pass the torch older house heads some of u have some crazy elitist attitudes that have caused house music to suffer people don't want to go to parties because they don't want to deal with it...so u partied at the garage and heard Larry Levan live share that information don't have an attitude about it and give the younger ones dramatics when they try to support your parties. Yeah I said it and if u are offended u are probably one of those people ruining the scene...nice work.

The tools are there to breathe life back into the music scene and support our artists...there it is...let the revolution begin

Artists that I admire and love...Azariah Gunn

Hey Beautiful People so it has been awhile but I am back to blog about an amazing and dynamic woman Azariah Gunn.  A few years ago I brought a group of my students to see a play written by talented writer Craig SirmuMsila Grant focusing on the life of a teenager living in the inner city, when a young lady walked on stage and blew me and my students away with her performance and beauty. From that moment on I became a fan and I am also honored to call her my friend.

Suzette "Azariah" Gunn is not only a talented actress she is also a writer and director from New York. She is a young woman who not only chose to study all sides of acting but keeps herself actively involved with each entity. She has a degree in Acting from Howard University, DC and Oxford University, England. This multicultural actress known as the chameleon has starred and guest starred on TV, film and in theater, having played a variety of nationalities and characters in a range of genres. She has received glowing reviews in the NY Times, Variety, NY Post and NY Sun. Azariah seeks to break barriers in this field looking for challenging unconventional roles that speak to the human condition. She was recently seen as supporting lead, Lisette Santiago in “Roadie” by Michael Cuesta (director of Showtime’s “Dexter”) and next working alongside Oscar winner Tilda Swinton in “We Should Talk About Kevin”

Azariah is also a developing partner in the workshop “The Art of the Craft” (www.artofthecraft.com)This workshop focuses on building artistic, personal and scholastic development in young people. Her directorial debut film “Spare Change” had its red carpet premiere at the HBO International Latino Film Festival in the summer of 2010.

Yesterday, Azariah was the guest speaker at one my schools. She read an excerpt from her new book A-Z Diaries that is launching today. Needless to say she made quite an impression and gained at least 200 new fans in the 12-14 age range ; ). A-Z Diaries is a riveting and raw account of a woman's secret thoughts about life. This hybrid of non-fiction and fiction is told boldly with unapologetic vulnerability and sexuality. Filled with candid honesty and passions that would make a grown man blush, juxtaposed thought provoking pieces about humanity, love and acceptance. This collection of poetry and short stories will captivate. The secret caverns of a woman's mind can be absolutely fascinating. Amen to that!

THE BOOK WILL BE ON SALE MAY 31st AT AMAZON.COM and other Online Sites. Sites will be released today so stay tuned!

So you see I wasn't lying when I said this woman is dynamic and also quite inspiring. She will mesmerize u on stage, film and now with her written word. Azariah you are quite lucky I am only into boys ; )

jesus loves u and so do I...

so I am walking thru times square on my way home and a young woman looking like she just stepped off the farm in Wisconsin, walks up to me and hands me a flyer

girl: Jesus loves u and so do I...do u love Jesus?
me: why yes...yes I do
girl: u can be saved...no matter who u are
me: really...what leads u to believe that
girl: well u look...look like a lesbian
me: well u look like a stepford wife in training...
girl: what's that?
me: exactly

so after crumpling up the flyer in her face and telling her I felt very sorry for her and trying really hard not to punch her. I walked away feeling even more angry than I have been since north carolina made their wonderful decision and became the 29th state of stupidity... and I thought...WTF???

yes no eloquence needed here...no big vocabulary words came to mind. Is it me or is good old America the land of the free, the pillar of democracy heading in an alarming rate into the dark ages. It seems to be the norm now to judge others in the name of God on one's sexual preference. So if it was possible that I am lesbian, even though I am a good person pay my taxes and love mankind...I am ultimately going to burn in hell. Little girl u can kiss my ass. Even more appalling is what psycho brainwashed this poor child into believing this? Not to mention she was wearing a purity ring. According to my good old friend Wikipedia

Purity rings (also known as chastity rings or abstinence rings) are worn as a sign of chastity. The practice originated in the United States in the 1990s among Christian-affiliated sexual abstinence groups.[1] Wearing a purity ring is typically accompanied by a religious vow to practice abstinence until marriage.[2]
David Bario of the Columbia News Service wrote:[3]
Under the Bush administration, organizations that promote abstinence and encourage teens to sign virginity pledges or wear purity rings have received federal grants. The Silver Ring Thing, a subsidiary of a Pennsylvania evangelical church, has received more than $1 million from the government to promote abstinence and to sell its rings in the United States and abroad.
really...funding was given to this but schools are being shut down go figure.

Seems like this special group of chastity chasing teenagers decided to make a trip to NYC to promote their beliefs after North Carolina's "assbackwardness" (remember when Sarah Palin used that word in her interview with Barbara Walters...yeah she's good for something) yesterday. To put in bluntly I am terrified and I don't scare easy. What's next witch hunts? To use the word of God, Allah, Buddah whomever u follow or believe in to promote hatred is sickening. Do these people truly read the bible or is it left open to interpretation to fit their needs. I think I will go with the latter.  The president gave his view on the matter of NC's decision...view below if u haven't already and this is one of the many reasons why he will get my vote.

How would the breadbasket react to a busload of LGBT individuals making a trip to a few states to share their beliefs...don't think it would go over too well. But a girl can dream.

the pick up line...where art thou

so i venture out into the new neighborhood for some grub and as luck would have it I get hit on by another winner

dude: (standing behind me in line) cheep, cheep, cheep
me: (of course I turn around..it wasn't a bad bird call)
dude: so u like that huh
me: crickets
dude: i figured cat calling u would have been rude
me: u figured huh...
dude: yeah so i did the bird call and I am also broke so i figured I would kill two birds with one stone...what do u think
me: I think u are brain dead

really?

Now I have had some really good pick up lines used on me in my time and always by older gents. They seem to have mastered the craft quite well. I think my favorite line  ever was when a cat told me I was "walking dynamite" how can u not blush at that! Yes I am independent, can take care of myself blah blah blah...but i enjoy a gentleman with wit and yes every once in a while  a bit of poetry. I remember once as a little girl reading an article on a famous silent film actress...her name escapes me now she told a story however of how she met her husband. She was at a party and he grabbed a handful of peanuts turned to her and said..."I'm only sorry they are not emeralds." What???? Game !

I wonder why cant the young bucks get it. If they are not trying to whip out their parent's credit card, they are giving u a job description, or they are just plain corny, So gentleman tell me is the art of the pick up line lost? According to an article in Men's Health ..."Women gave higher ratings to humorous approaches ("Excuse me, I just noticed you noticing me and I just wanted to give you notice that I noticed you too. . . ") than men thought they would." Hmmm ..yeah i can agree with that...a dude who can make me laugh definitely ups his chances. Sexual innuendo however does not...duh. Pretty intuitive Men's Health. Read more at Men's Health:

http://www.menshealth.com/sex-women/dating-tips-art-pickup-line#ixzz1u9VjDyY9

I also asked a few gents that shall remain nameless...their thoughts on the pick up line most of them said no. Right....guess they are keeping their secrets to themselves. SO what is a girl to do when she is in the mood to be charmed. Of course some dudes are scratching their heads right now...I guess that is the beauty of it right...lol

Artists that I admire and love...Weekend Money

So the past week has been filled with an abundance of talented artists and original music. Tonight is no exception.  Weekend Money comprises of producer and (Hot Sugar protége) Baghdaddy and rapper Ness (of A-Alikes/Eye2025 fame) the gents are currently in the studio working on their EP which will drop June 5th 2012. I had the pleasure of sitting in with the boys for a quick minute at the studio and June 5th can't come fast enough...promo please...hint...hint ;) In the interim u can catch them at some live shows in and around NYC as well as their latest video Insomniac which is dope and getting a lot of buzz...this black and white goodie gets deep in your head with visuals and vocals that are just damn dirty.

Press release states:

"For the Brooklyn, New York-based act, its at once serious, but trippy; ‘hood, but decadent. A straight-no-chaser smiley face in a haze of smoke amid artists, thugs, model chicks, around-the-way-girls, and rebels.

“We live in the proverbial city that never sleeps, right?” says Ness of the thought-process that went into writing the treatment for the ‘Insomniac’ video. “That’s what it’s all about. There are a lot of things that go on in New York from the wild party scenes to grinding for that bread. We wanted to film it in black and white to stay away from that polished tone because life is not polished. This shit ain’t Hollywood.”

For Baghdaddy, the “Insomniac” clip symbolizes the culmination of a project that was first sparked a little over a year ago when the Philadelphia born Ness—a member of the dead prez affiliated group A-Alikes—first hooked up with the Hot Sugar protégé. “People can now visually see the dynamic of Weekend Money,” he excitedly says. “Ness and I put so much time and aggression into this project. We’ve done so much in such a short time…things that make us excited as music fans. This is the kind of music we want to hear on the radio and on the streets.”

If u want to spend only $5.00 and hear some rockin music...head to recoup lounge tonight at 210 rivington street to see them. Doors open at 7pm.

Take a gander at the video...

Its nice to feel that old energy of NYC...guess all the hipsters must be on vacation or something ; )

Artists that I admire and love...Eric J. Henderson

So a little over a year ago I am at a book signing for a dear friend of mine Mike Schreiber who I will be spotlighting soon and in walks a very tall handsome gentleman with a strange little camera in his hand. Now I know nothing about photography I just know what I like but I was completely intrigued by both the mechanism and the man.

Move to present day and I can now call this gentleman, Eric J. Henderson a friend, a talented photographer who has created many dynamic images of NYC and the world with this little contraption known as the brownie. This little 1950's treasure was purchased for $5.00 back in 2003 from a homeless gentleman at the corner of 125th and Park avenue. Since then, Eric taught himself to shoot and landed a global campaign for Bombay Gin, served as an art photographer for the BMW Guggenheim Lab and has had his work featured at the Studio Museum in Harlem. He has also had commissions in Morocco, France, Brazil and Africa.

If staring at him or his work isn't enough he is also an inclusive writer with a regular Huffington Post column on "Art, the Arts & Policy"  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ericjhenderson

Recently I just spoke to Eric via phone as he was smoking his cigar in Miami on layover to Cuba...what a life huh. He will be shooting down there for the next week and I can only imagine the beautiful pictures he will return with. So while I simmered with jealousy I wished my friend safe travels and also reminded him he better bring back some good music as well and yes Eric I am reminding u here yet again...bring back musica ; )

see some shots below but please visit his website for more info...

I gave him my number and I still haven't heard from him

so i am sitting on the train on my way to work...two women in their 20s are having a conversation

1st girl: so I meet this guy on wed night at *** and he was so hot
2nd girl: and... (giggling uncontrollably..it was a little unnerving)
1st girl: we hung out all night... we did it in the bar's bathroom. I gave him my number and I still haven't heard from him.
2nd girl: what a loser
elderly woman (getting off the train): you are an idiot, what do u think this is the 60s!
me: (loud outburst of laughter...more like a death rattle since I was drinking coffee, but whatever)

ummmm...come on!!!!

Now I am all about freedom and sexual expression and the like... but really thinking that someone will call u after u banged him in the bathroom, at a bar, after a few hours of meeting them...I am surprised he even took her number. Of course, I could be wrong...stranger things have happened. I went on one date with my ex and we stayed together for 7 years...the longest 7 years of my life...but 7 years nonetheless. Maybe I am getting old... I don't know...heading into my 40s I find that some young women and I use the word some really have lost their minds. I am not even going to get into all that morality and save yourself crap...my issue is simply safety. I have my female students tell me all the time how they are followed on their way to and from school, I have had a few numb nuts  myself approach me and even try to touch me on the street. Not to mention the many fools I see waiting for that one girl to  get just drunk enough so he can hit on her and possibly take her home. Are these young girls that are now of drinking age really that dotish or is that how the hipsters do it. So now I am sitting at a coffee shop, pondering and  writing with some annoying not so cute dude...trying to read over my shoulder...he just stopped...mission accomplished! Time to continue

Maybe some of these ridiculously stupid people think they are carrying on the theme of free love?

According to Wikipedia, The term free love has been used [1] to describe a social movement that rejects marriage, which is seen as a form of social bondage. The Free Love movement’s initial goal was to separate the state from sexual matters such as marriage, birth control, and adultery. It claimed that such issues were the concern of the people involved, and no one else.

Yep, sounds about right to me. OK I wonder about marriage, I don't wear a bra, I'm a hippie . Unfortunately, most people will say its just an excuse to be promiscuous...cough...Republicans. Whether it is or isn't, I don't think it should be an excuse for outright lunacy. Where are your friends? When I first started going out we traveled in packs for protection, no one ambled off with a stranger, no one stumbled out of the club alone walking down the street in cheap short dresses and jimmy choo knock-offs. Someone was always looking out so no one ended up dead. Of course there are my favorites...the transient girls that like to walk thru the hood at 2 am in the morning in whimsical short dresses, yeah good luck with that. I don't take the train after 12 am. I can spare a couple dollars to save my life and someone possibly getting his head cracked...but I digress.  Note to the dudes too...if she is having sex with you within hours of meeting u...do u think she is really making sure everything is OK down there probably not and vice versa. I am tired of turning on the news and seeing this young girl or other disappearing from a club and ending up dead somewhere. Get it together ladies, have your fun of course but within in reason, there are an abundance of crackpots out there...you would be surprised what I see from the DJ booth. Sometimes when u are praying to hook up with that hot guy...someone is actually preying on you.

Artists I admire and love...YK Hong

If u have ever been to a cool function or danced in the park in the summer and u happen to see a fantastic looking woman with a short cut taking your picture, or hear the most beautiful, infectious laugh ever...more than likely u have come across the extraordinary YK Hong.

Extraordinary is a term I do not use loosely. YK does it all and well. YK is a self-taught artist who draws from her multi-cultural and trans-global background to incorporate ideas of struggle and anti-oppression into her work. Her dual U.S. and Korean upbringing is reflected in the themes and technique of her work and she is a hell of a cook too : ). She incorporates her design background into her work to communicate messages that are politically provocative, reflect mindfulness, cross-culturalism and multiple identities.

Currently, YK has a few exhibits that are opening in April...definitely go and check out her fabulous work.

Restoration Plaza, 1360 Fulton St, 3rd Fl, Brooklyn, NY 11233

The exhibition is called  Amplify Action and the full exhibition runs through July 28, 2012. “Amplify Action: Sustainability through the Arts” demonstrates how arts, culture and media are powerful catalysts for social change, and aims to engage neighborhoods in a dialogue about sustainable living, making healthy consumer choices, and taking environmental action.

In addition to being an artist, YK is also an anti-oppression trainer, traveling around the country giving talks and workshops about anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-homophobia and having dialogues about oppression on a daily basis. Her creative work portrays this same message of dismantling oppression through daily dialogue and action. YK has sat on numerous panels and has also lectured on various topics around the country. Presently she is working on a project that focuses on her self-created practice for non-attachment, letting go and change. For more information click on this link 365 Release.

So as u can I see I didn't use the word extraordinary lightly and she fixes computers too. She saved my baby and my livelihood for sure!

Games People Play....

So on this fine morning I borrow my friend's bike to go to yoga, on my way back I stop to get a cup of coffee at you guessed it...my old bodega and of course without a doubt someone strikes up a conversation...this one was a bit different however...sometimes u find the answers in the most unexpected places

older gent: young lady u are very pretty
me: thanks
older gent: you have a beau
me:(I smile, I like the fact that he used the word beau) no sir, I don't
older gent: why not, a woman like u should have one
me: just unlucky I guess
older gent: You want to know what I think
me: I have a feeling no matter what my answer you are going to tell me anyway sir.

older gent:  Damn right! In just being in your presence for a minute I can tell u eat thunder and drink the rain (now he just quoted a line from one of my favorite songs Obeah Woman by Nina Simone...I am smitten) Whatever boy let you go is a damn fool, a man wouldn't let that happen.

me: (even more curious now I ask) what's the difference?

older gent: Stop dealing with boys who masquerade as men, they are fake soldiers that haven't fought any real battles. boys will come after u, a man will catch u, boys will try to change u, a man will love u for who u are, boys will compliment u, a man will honor u, boys will make u cry, a man will wipe your tears, boys will run from u when they realize u are indeed a woman who happens to be beautiful, not just a beautiful woman...do u understand?

me:  I do thank u
older gent: Females do it too it's just the games people play. I bet u have a list of things u will and won't stand for, stick to that and u will be just fine.

well...wow...now I am back after spending close to 45 minutes with this gent and I am glad I had my notebook with me because I was writing everything down...it made my head spin really but in a good way.

So here I am thinking about relationships and how some people get it right and others don't. BTW this older gent was married for 46 years, his wife passed away a few months ago...so I feel pretty lucky to have some of that wisdom thrown at me. I have been single for some time now and happily so..but I admit because I am human and a passionate one at that...that it does get lonely...sometimes. I still wonder if being in a relationship is the way to go...as far as I've seen only swans seem to get it right...as they only have one mate their entire lives...but I digress. When I am not out trying to organize the next big adventure or simply smelling the flowers...every now and again someone will catch my eye but almost inevitably they disappoint. Disappoint how? you say.  Without trying to sound like a bitter soon to be cat lady below is a list of things that I always find intriguing about people who are dating, seeing each other, hanging out, friends with benefits, whatever the hell u want to call it...there are some do's and don'ts too...probably why I am still single, but I get great advice from older men
; )

  1. don't say u are going to call and don't
  2. mean what you say and say what you mean...there are still a few people out there that live by this code
  3. be nice...that is all
  4. fight for someone if u believe that they are the one...there is something really beautiful about that
  5. I think its weird if couples don't argue at all...that's the kind of relationship that leads to a real crime episode on A&E
  6. I rather know you are an a**hole upfront, than find out weeks later
  7. a girl can only be told she is pretty so many times
  8. mourn your last relationship, however u need to do it...so u can get over it
  9. don't be jealous of another person's approach to life...some of us do just fine  paying our bills and being a free spirit
  10. make better cologne and perfume choices
  11. let someone know when they have been disrespectful...too many people go through life being obnoxious and they should be enlightened.
  12. that old adage "its not u..its me" is so damn on point
  13. don't be a douche...no need for definition here.
  14. not everyone is trying to sleep over...some people enjoy their bed...alone
  15. be graceful when handing someone their ass..works every time
  16. learn how to cook...for real
  17. if it smells like bullshit...probably is
  18. don't stand someone up...that just shows no home training what so ever
  19. guys are just as dramatic as girls...yeah I said it
  20. never think you can't get played
  21. love letters are cool I don't care what anyone else says
  22. have friends that u can "always" discuss your relationship issues with...always
  23. no need to blow people up on facebook...no one needs to know or cares about it
  24. don't hit on friends of the dude or girl u just broke up with yesterday
  25. laugh more
  26. cry more
  27. travel more
  28. dance it out
  29. its ok to call if u are genuinely concerned about someone, if u don't hear back...well there it is
  30. always walk with money in your pocket...ya never know
  31. don't speak to your ex only when your current one is not around...make introductions it makes life easier for everyone
  32. why bring your current one to a place you frequented with your ex...that is just plain stupid and dramatic
  33. if u like someone tell them, call them...what's with the waiting game
  34. dead the "text"ships
  35. If u really want to see someone...make the time...seriously
  36. stop trying to sound smart...when you really are not
  37. if u are not interested anymore...let the person know u might just gain a friend and maybe that's what is was supposed to be in the first place
  38. cut someone off that treats you badly
  39. don't assume because someone treats you with kindness they are trying to sling the ball and chain around your ankle...you are probably just lucky enough to have met a good person
  40. girls can make booty calls too...what's with the double standard
  41. run from crazy...like the wind
  42. try above all else to be happy with yourself...hard terrain i know but it makes the healing a hell of a lot easier
  43. take advice from your elders...they know the deal

Artists that I admire and love...Mr. Barrie Sharpe

I had the pleasure to meet this fine gentleman while I was across the pond. If you are into acid jazz and rare groove, this is the man that was behind all of that starting in the mid 80s. Master Plan and Sun Worshippers were two tracks that were a staple in my DJ bag. I actually had to replace Master Plan three times as it always miraculously disappeared at the end of the night while I was packing up my records. The pioneer of the rare groove scene, in 1985 he opened "The Cat In The Hat Club" in Central London. Alongside Lascelle he played 70's funk, which later became known as "Rare Groove", a big influence on the ever changing London Club culture. The entire "Rare Groove" scene was started @ The "Cat In The Hat" by Lascelles Lascelle and Barrie. The duo brought such great tunes as "Across The Track", "Think About It", "I Know You Got Soul" & "I Believe In Miracles" His music is always evolving, his resume ridiculously impressive and he is an absolute gent. Barrie has hosted many successful club nights around the London and I had the pleasure of attending one. The music was spectacular and I didn't expect anything less. So if u are ever in London, u need without a doubt to hear this man play. He will be the well-dressed cat in the DJ booth banging out some mind blowing gems.

Not only a fantastic producer and DJ he is also the designer and founder of the well known men's clothing line Duffer of St George and now Sharpeye. What else has this man done...well he has also written an autobiography I read a small snippet and I want more. He details, vividly I might add, his experience growing up in London and the music scene in the 70s and 80s. Barrie is an innovator, creator, father, designer, writer, and activist. He doesn't mince words or take short cuts in any of his endeavors and the proof is in every final creation

give a listen to some of his recent amazing work. I am honored to be on one of his tracks and to call him a friend.

brooklyn...we have culture

since a great deal of people seem to think Williamsburg is the coolest place in Brooklyn I am here to tell u simply...its not. Brooklyn has an abundance of history which runs 400 years that is pretty impressive if I do say so myself. Instead of waiting for the list of 10 things to do in Brooklyn which seems to always happen in Williamsburg (again mind boggling) one spot you should definitely hit is the Brooklyn Historical Society. I have been going here since I was a teenager and I have never been disappointed. Founded in 1863 the building houses an abundance of history on Brooklyn. As one in seven Americans can trace their family roots to Brooklyn, the BHS collections represent an important national resource. So how  you like them apples : )

From exhibits, to lectures, to after school programming BHS has it all. In June, a wonderful exhibit will open  focusing on the history of Brooklyn dating back to the Dutch settlers. The exhibit will be curated and designed by 4 Brooklyn high schools...how cool is that?! The building  holds a museum, educational center and library. Its only $6 for adults $4 for everyone else and free if u are a member. Check out the blog too, there are some great photographs on there.

Now go get some culture : )

artists that I admire and love...DJ Kamala

if u are looking for something to do on a Thursday night your best bet is Bathtub Gin http://bathtubginnyc.com/ located  at 132 9th Ave (between 18th St & 19th St)  a cute little coffee shop by day head into the back at night and u will find a speakeasy vibe with great cocktails. The  main attraction in my book however is the fantastic DJ...Kamala. The lovely Kamala is a NYC girl who has been a staple in the music scene for over a decade. Her music taste is both diverse and knowledgeable and to top it off she is quite easy on the eyes ; ) Skilled in all genres of music from hip-hop to house with this beautiful spirit on the decks you are guaranteed to have a great night, no matter what location.

Her roster includes a plethora of clients and well known venues in the metro area. This summer Kamala and I are embarking on a European tour with stops in London, Paris, Italy, and Ibiza to name a few. We are excited to bring our spin on house and experience how this genre of music is accepted around the world. Later this year Kamala will also release a much awaited single...ahem where is my promo lady?? :) This track well definitely become a head banger. Stay tuned for more from this spectacular, dynamic, beautiful woman  who I am also lucky enough to call friend :)

Check out her website for all updates on her events and there are some great mixes too!

so u moved to NYC...learn how to act

so I stop at the local store to grab a cup of coffee and proceed to cuss out a hipster that thought it was cool to push in front of two elderly people to get his coffee because he was late for band rehearsal...right band rehearsal at 10:30 am..but I digress

I adore my city and to see what is has become has made me to put it mildly sad...the beautiful thing about this place is that everyone is from somewhere else and they bring their own flavor to the city that is what used to give it that beautiful frenetic energy but the new batch well u are boring to say the least. I feel the need to vent and if u are offended well u can kiss my ass. Here are a few things some of u hipsters should try...maybe people will start liking u

This is dedicated to all u transients that have moved to New York and think u are cool...I got news for u you're not and this is why...

Support the local bodegas where u can get a damn good cup of coffee for 75 cents instead of going to the new coffee shop that makes burnt coffee for 5 dollars or more

Oh u shop only at the organic market in your neighborhood really have u noticed that the owners are usually the same people that own the bodegas? Duh...

What's up with the full on beards really???  they smell handle that

Stop trying to tell me about Brooklyn and if I have been to this spot or that more than likely I have been to that spot when it was five different things already

U think you are cool cause u live in the hood well support the businesses that have been there for years say good morning to the people in your neighborhood yeah NYers do that

Oh the high line impresses u its train tracks people with some greenage...if you are really all about environmentalism help set up a garden in your neighborhood get the local kids involved it used to happen here all the time

Oh u live in east Williamsburg? That's bushwick love

Stop wearing flannel when it is hot out...please

Stop asking to touch my hair NY used to have so much diversity... is natural hair really so strange

Grown men should not have bangs you look crazy.

New Yorkers stick together and we are nice people so get an attitude adjustment or u will get cussed out and stop having a look of shock when it happens you are just plain rude

I miss my brooklyn, long island, Spanish accents terribly...

U live by the water in Williamsburg classy they used to drop bodies over there...just saying

Stop calling 311 all the damn time u don't like the noise of the city go back from where u came from...it used to be the city that never sleeps now it's dead at 2 am

Thanks for ruining the club scene and why don't u guys dance what the hell do u have to talk about when a great song is blaring on a nice sound system

Girls should not smell.. ok u believe deodorant is full if chemicals but yet you chain smoke and go the bars keep your insides clean it's called cleansing

Why cant I figure out where any of u are from...be distinct be proud of where u come from...share your history instead of trying to overpower ours

Look up the word flavor and I don't mean in the dictionary
